Chapter 5: Spiders are scary

It had been three days since they had gone into the forest, that's how long she thought they had been in the forest, they had slept three times so that's probably how long they had been in there. One thing Idalia really didn’t like about this forest was that it was even darker in here than it was outside, so it was almost pitch black in there. The second thing was that she felt like she was being watched,constantly, and not just because Jade and Mud kept looking back to glare at her for saying not to go into the forest holding them up for a day. They had eventually won when they said they’d leave her behind, so not wanting to do the walk of shame back to the town she followed them. The reason why as previously stated was that there would be many animals in there to hide from the rain,  and most of them were probably not friendly.

“I-I think we’re near the end,” exclaimed Jade.
“Really! How do you know that?” Firus asked turning back to look at Jade.
“Well when I went to the village near ours I remember seeing this rock.”
“Oh whoop de do we’re getting out of the forest that you MADE us go in, also how much longer is it  going to take?” Idalia said butting into the conversation.
“hmm about, three days,”
That did not please the masses, of about three animals.
So they continued walking at a brisker pace than before. After a few hours they heard a scream? Jade froze and looked down the path they were walking.
“Hey uh Firus, you see anything down there?”
“It uh looks like a wolf, I think but what is that behind her?”
Mud looked and said, “Looks like spiders,”
“Huh, what? Spiders? what are you guys talking about?” Idalia asked as she hurried up. “Umm are those humongous spiders chasing that wolf?”
“Yes.” was the reply as everyone stood dumbfounded.
“Wait! The wolf is running this way.”
“Should we umm run?”
“Wow that thought never crossed my mind, great thinking Idalia.” Jade replied.
“No really it's getting closer, we really should run.” Idalia turned around and started to run in the other direction, only Idalia. Firus,Mud and Jade stood transfixed. Well if those idiots want to die they can stay there and get eaten by spider, but not Firus, he was the only one who was nice to me! I can’t let him be eaten by spiders. Idalia sighed as she turned around and ran towards Firus.
“Come on Firus, let's go! Do you have a death wish?”
“No, not really.”
“Then what are you still doing here?!”
Firus turned to her, “I don't think that wolf there has a death wish either so maybe we should help her.”
“Ugh Firus, but if I die I want you to know its your fault.”
Jade leaned forward and looked at Idalia, “Shut up we need the element of surprise to beat those things, geez the things are as large as the wolf. Jade hoped into the undergrowth next to her part of the path, followed by Mud. Firus ran to the other side. Idalia sat for a minute confused but hopped after Firus with a sigh.
                    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dragons’ breath rasped in her throat, at this pace the darn spiders would catch up and eat her. Hearing voices ahead she opened her eyes and looked up, four animals! She, she was saved! Then the smallest one turned around and ran away. No no no!  Dragon wanted to yell, you're supposed to help me come back. The foxes steps faltered and she turned back and ran back, she talked with the wolf and then sat down. Another fox looked at and yelled at the first fox then jumped into the forest followed by the larger fox then the wolf hopped into the forest too, and after a few seconds the smallest fox joined him. What in the world? Are they running away like the fox? She kept running the heard
“Aim for the legs!” Then the four animals leaped at the spiders. Two foxes leaped at one, the wolf leaped at another, and the smaller fox leaped at the larger spiders back. Dragon helped the wolf with one spider. After a few minutes Dragon and the wolf had finally defeated the spider. Dragon looked up and saw the fox on the back of the spider, just the back. The spider's legs had been chewed off.
Chapter 4 Across the River
How in the world will we be able to cross?  Idalia wondered . Jade stared at the water and was mumbling to herself. And she thinks I am weird! Look at her talking to herself like a crazy lady.
    “Guys, we need to get to a place where the river is wider,” Jade told them as she started to walk down stream. Idalia stayed toward the end of the group, which was the farthest she could get from Jade and Clay.
    “Umm why do we need to get to a wider area of the river?” Questioned Idalia as they all trotted down river.
    “The reason is obvious the river will be slower,” replied Jade after setting a piercing look at Idalia.
“Why,” Idalia asked in an intentionally annoying voice.
“Because the water will have more space to move, if it was narrower the water would be pushing to move,” Jade said trying to sound intelligent.
“But won’t there be,” she feigned a gasp for added effect, “ Leeches?!”
Idalia heard the audible groan from Jade “We’ll just move fast.”
“What if we uproot a rock and get a leech on the person behind us?”
“We’ll move side by side,” Jade quipped back.
“And if the slope to the other side can only let one animal up at a time?”
Idalia was quite enjoying the verbal brawl, it was nice to vent but have it look like innocent questions. While the two guys looked back and forth in confusion, the girls shot back and forth at each other. The guys eventually had enough of their squabble, at the same time.
“STOP YOUR BICKERING, IDIOTS!”
“Guys please stop fighting.”
All was silent for a moment before thunder rolled in,waking them from a daze.They continued on for some time, hours maybe it could have been a day for all Idalia knew. It was always cloudy and telling by the color of the clouds wasn’t always accurate, because in the stormier days all she could guess was that night when it could have  been day.  when will jade say to stop? Everyone was getting tired, when finally, ‘Let’s cross here!” Said Jade as she walked cautiously down the slope closely followed by Clay and Firus. Idalia took some prompting to go down.
    “Okay,” Jade said, “we need to go one at a time.”
    “Who goes first?” Questioned Idalia, right before Jade ran toward the opposite end of the river. Once she was around half-way, which took a minute, Clay ran out after her. Firus followed soon afterward trying to avoid the large splashes Clay mad when he landed. Idalia follow after to not be left behind. Idalia did not try to avoid the waves that Clay made when he landed, and got a face full of dirty water. She got disoriented and fell on her back, when she finally opened her eyes she saw the sun? No, it wasn't the sun. It was a big crystal looking thing, what? Something at the edge of her mind was tugging to get out then.
    “IDALIA You’re getting pulled by the current,  get up NOW!” Idalia shot shot up and looked in Firus’ direction. Firus and everyone else was at the opposite bank and she was being pulled downriver,fast. Idalia flipped over and started to run up river which was going worse than expected, and she expected herself  to be doing pretty bad. She was slowly making her way against the current and sometimes the rocks under her paws slipped out from under her making her stumble and fall down, and still Firus,Jade and Mud just sat there waiting for her. When she finally got to the shore and dragged herself onto land Jade gave off a snide remark, “Well you’re finally here took you long enough.”
    “Took me long enough?! I could’ve died!” Jade said nothing but simplified turned around and kept walking.
Chapter 3 Off to the Woods
    The gates opened as the four companions left the walled town.
“So we go this way” Jade told them as she pointed toward the forest.
    “I can’t imagine why we have to be the ones who save the whole island from flooding! Why can’t it be the animals that live closer to the mountain?” Questioned Idalia.
    “Because a prophecy foretold it you id- Idalia,” Replied Jade haughtily
“Well I’m just saying. Like what if it was a hoax or something.”
“Well-”
“Stop fighting it’s getting on my nerves,” the deep voice of the fox/creature thing snapped.
“It’s obvious thats Jade is right
“Wha- but,” Idalia stuttered in response.
“Stop trying to weasel out of your responsibility,” he said.
“ And just who are you huh?”
“Mud, thats my name,”
“Um nice name?” replied Idalia.
Everyone walked on awkwardly. Idalia felt two pairs of eyes boring into her as she walked Is firus totally unaware of the hostility toward me? Really is he CLUELESS Firurs started to hum an upbeat happy tune in contrast to the weather as the thought entered I dalias head. Nope. He does not. Wow. Just wow...  They walked for an hour or so more. When Idalia heard Jade pipe up from the front.
“Guys?”
“What?” Replied Firus.
“Remember that creek we all used to play in as pups, Firus?” Jade asked.
“Duh, that tiny river was awesome, why  are you bringing it up now.”
    “Well,”Jade said, “It's not so tiny anymore,”
    Firus and Idalia ran toward the hill Jade was on Mud lagging behind them. Idalia looked down and gasped. Idalia saw a large rock fall in, it was pulled by so fast she blinked and it went a yard. This did not look good.
Authors note:
Chapter 2 Mission Briefing (no grammer check,you're welcome)
Thump thump thump. Idalia was woken by a loud knock on her door.
“Idalia the chieftain requests your presence," said a  females voice.
Why would the chieftain want to see me?  Idalia thought. Her head cleared and…
“EEEEK!! Uh-oh I need to go,” Idalia mumbled as  she bolted through the door.
“Hey if YOU don’t mind you can wait,” A silver fox yelled.
“Oh umm ya uh sorry,"
The silver fox trotted lazily toward Idalia. I hate meeting new animals now. Thought Idalia. Any animals she did meet were hostile and would reply in few words if she said anything. This had all started when… “Ey! Chieftain. Wants to. See. You. Now!,"  yowled the silver fox in her ear. Idalia stumbled and fell down. The silver fox tried to hide her sneer. Fine sheesh you didn’t have to yell dullard. No bad Idalia don’t think that word be nice. Maybe she could be your new friend. Idalia picked herself off the ground. “Fine. lets go," she replied with contempt.
    Idalia and the silver fox walked toward the big hut in the center of the village.  Is her name Raven ? Lets find out. “So um Rav-”
“My name is Jade,"  shot back the silver fox
“Oh um sorry I just mistook you for a friend o-”
“I am the only silver fox in the whole village and you have no friends besides Firus,"
Rude! That was harsh guess she is totally absolutely not friend material. After a minute of awkward silence they arrived at chieftain's grand den.  Actually, it’s not that grand - but it is a lot better than my den, though. When the rain first started, the wind was so strong that it tore down the whole village- and no one has time to make it as  extravagant as it was before-  animals are now focusing on getting more food because all the prey is hiding.
“Hey, Firus!” yelled Jade.
"Hi Jade" replied Firus. Another fox was following Firus or what Idalia thought was a fox. The fox was as big as Firus and his pelt was dark brown. His tongue was lolling  out on the right side of his mouth but he had that fox flair. Idalia was reasonably confused about what species he was in. He looked around hungrily.  The big  fox’s eyes met hers and he bared his teeth for a second. Umm excuse you  thought Idalia  How is that… thing even a fox? Is it a fox? While everyone else was talking about the quote unquote epic adventure they were going on. Idalia begged to differ, why were they supposed to go on an adventure to stop it why not great warriors do it? Steadily the rain grew harder and faster maybe some sleet was there too. Idalia heard Jade say something along the lines of “Idalia is such a charming fox no wonder she has soo many friends!” Lies! Lies,LIES she's just saying that so Firus is still her friend ugh! Everyone pretends to like me around Firus so he still hangs out with them. Why do the dislike me so much? Idalia wondered as she Walked over to the door fuming on the inside and knocked on it, with her head.
“Who are you? Don’t you know its raining like there is no tomorrow out there,”  said a voice from behind the door.
“It’s Idalia….. and friends,” said Idalia with more bitterness than she meant .
“Oh?OH! Please do come in!”
The large oak door opened. The deputy a fox with most of her pelt orange, black paws and a white tipped tail was pulling it open with a brass door knocker. Idalia walked in with faux confidence & stood near the large fire pit in the center.  Idalia heard voices come from the still open oak door.  In came Firus,Jade, & that wolf fox creature thing.  The fox/wolf ,she wasn’t sure which it was, thing sat on her right, Jade on her left, & Firus in front of her. Idalia looked behind Firus. There she saw the doors to the catwalk the chieftain usually made announcements on. On her left beyond Jade was a door frame with a few vines hanging down the bones of small animals (bone marrow sucked out) were attached to making a clicking noise when an animal went through. Which was exactly what they did when the chieftain walked in.
    “ Hello chieftain,” uttered all the foxes & wolves.
    “You all may be wondering why I brought you here,” the chieftain said as he circled the group around the fire.
“You see a believe you are the animals in a prophecy spoken long ago in said prophecy the animals go a mountain top and stop the big lake , that surrounds us on every side, from flooding the island,” He finished with such finality that even hinting that he could be wrong could result in aggravation from the Chief.
So thats why we were called here? Some prophecy. And we are the animals to save the island? Really thats just. Wow.
    “So if you follow me I will show you a map of the island made by the tribe of eagles,”he told them as he walked into another room and closely followed the other animals.  The map was very old but very well crafted it showed all the land beautifully.
    “This is the route you will go,” said the chief showing the long way around the island. The island was like a circle but there was a huge lake in the middle. On the right side ,that the village was closer to, was a desert that just where it ended was rain mountain. On the left side was densely packed forest that turned into a large meadow that had many villages in it along with a few tiny mountains.
    “ Why are we going the long way?” Inquired Idalia. “The desert side clearly is shorter and easier route, plus we can get water from the lake if we go to the shore the forest on the left side is on a cliff! No where near water.”
    “Idalia the reason is simple,” snarled Jade “The desert has the coyotes, if we went over there they would rip us to shreds.”
    “Okay, Okay, whatever” Idalia replied. She looked up and saw the chieftain glaring at her. Can’t catch a break anywhere huh?
    “Any way if you two are done squabbling,” the chief continued  here are your packs for the journey. The deputy scrambled to pass them each one bag. Each of the bags contained food and water.
    “That is all I have to tell you, you may go now,” the chief said as he stared out a window.
The four canine adventures left., and walked toward the town gate in the dead of night.
